population 147,396. Located 120 km southwest of Bodhgaya, Sasaram is famous for the mausoleum of India's3rd emperor : the Afghan chieftain Sher Shah Suri, whose real name was Farid Khan, who died in 1545. At the time, the city was the capital of the Suri dynasty. This sumptuous mausoleum houses the emperor, a native of Sasaram, and his entire family. The view over the lake is superb. Rothasgarh Fort, the palace of Sher Shah Suri, is perhaps the oldest fort in the country and well worth a visit. If you're going to Varanasi by road, take the opportunity to visit the city and its monuments. It's well worth a visit.
