A track on the right leads to what is, in principle, the last Moroccan town before Mauritania. We say in principle, because this place looks more like a ghost town, under the custody of the Mauritanian authorities. Its colonial-era buildings, now in ruins, are gradually being buried under the sand and only a few fishermen are trying to survive. In the 1990s, the Moroccan government tried to revive the town by investing in infrastructure, but soon discovered that the land is not suitable for building. It has since been abandoned, housing only a Mauritanian military camp.
