The saying goes: "Tiznit, pass quickly", meaning "or you will lose all your money". Indeed, Tiznit is known as the capital of money. It proudly displays its jewels and will undoubtedly invite you to visit its many cooperatives. Tiznit is a pleasant stop on the road to Sidi Ifni and the Deep South. The center consists of a large square, the Méchouar, which serves as a bus station and parking lot, and where most of the hotels and cheap restaurants are concentrated. From this square, you can walk into the meandering medina, which is decorated with all its colors on market days. The city of Tiznit takes its name from a holy woman, Lalla Zninia who, according to legend, repented of her sins. God, as a sign of forgiveness, would have made a spring at her feet, Ain el-Kdim, the Blue Spring. The current city dates mainly from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It is surrounded by wide ramparts, which are intersected by 36 guard towers and 9 doors. This colossal work, completed in 1885, was erected by Moulay Hassan in order to consolidate his power in this region, which was plagued by a rebellious agitation. Tiznit is also the city where the adventure of El Hiba, the "blue sultan" begins. He was proclaimed Sultan in 1912, in reaction to the Treaty of Fez, and it is from there that he led his fight against the protectorate. The city of Tiznit has thus undergone a rather late expansion and does not offer any major historical interest, and it is particularly that which makes it pleasant.
