CAEN CASTLE
Castle built by William the Conqueror, witness to 1,000 years of Anglo-Norman history, located in the heart of the town.
Built on a 30-metre rocky peak 1,000 years ago, overlooking the two valleys that supplied the city with water and bearing witness to Anglo-Norman history, the Château de Caen and its medieval walls (one of the largest in Europe) occupy a privileged position in the heart of the city of Caen. Built by William the Conqueror around 1060 on the eve of the conquest of England, just a stone's throw from the two abbeys, it was the favorite residence of the Dukes of Normandy, future kings of England, before becoming a royal fortress in 1204. Today, its former moats and redeveloped esplanade have become a must-see spot in Caen, whether for a stroll, relaxation or cultural tourism with its two museums (Musée de Normandie and Musée des Beaux-Arts), its 11th- and 12th-century ramparts (offering a breathtaking view of the city), its fortified gates with 15th-century barbicans, its towers, its former keep (destroyed during the Revolution), its 11th-century reception hall (Salle de l'Échiquier) and its Romanesque church. A world of its own in the heart of town!
