LA GLACIÈRE SOUTERRAINE
Underground cavern in Caen used as an icehouse to store food, then as a refuge during the Second World War
Beneath Square Jeanine Boitard (a French Resistance fighter) lies a historic site. Excavated in the second half of the 19th century in the former Caen stone quarry, this ice house would have kept foodstuffs cool. With a depth of 12 meters, its central shaft was used to transport merchandise. During the Second World War, the basement served as a refuge for the people of Caen, who organized it as a place to live. Given the high level of interest in the site, plan your visit several months in advance!
