Abbey Church in Caen, with its own park, offering a guided tour of the Romanesque crypt of Saint-Nicolas-sous-Terre.
The abbey was founded around 1060 by Mathilde, Duchess of Normandy and wife of William the Conqueror. Its abbey church, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, houses the tomb of its illustrious founder. The convent, rebuilt in the 18th century and restored in 1986, now houses the headquarters of the Normandy Region. The guided tour includes the Romanesque crypt of Saint-Nicolas-sous-Terre, not forgetting the 950-year history of the abbey and its illustrious ladies! With its 5-hectare park, the Abbaye aux Dames site is a haven of tranquillity and greenery.
