A superb abbey, one of the most important ducal buildings in Normandy, a masterpiece of medieval art.
Caen boasts one of the most important monuments of the ducal era in Normandy. Founded in 1063 by William the Conqueror, then Duke of Normandy, it was intended to house Benedictine monks. Today, Caen's Town Hall occupies the monastic complex, rebuilt in the 18th century around a Tuscan-style cloister. Consecrated in 1077, the Gothic-style abbey church features a huge three-level Romanesque nave and houses the tomb of William the Conqueror. A must-see!
