Ebolowa, 170 km from Kribi and Yaoundé, is the main town in the southern region of Cameroon, and is renowned for its cleanliness, compared with other towns in Cameroon, which have often struggled to absorb the strong demographic expansion of the second half of the 20th century. The town's population is mainly made up of the Boulou people. The town, an important cocoa-gathering center, is quite interesting, but "beaming" all around it along the many logging roads that go deep into the forest remains the best angle from which to discover the surroundings. Of course, the only vehicle capable of taking you on such adventures is a 4x4. The most popular itinerary is a visit to Ako'akas rock, some 40 km to the south-east of the town (on the road between Ebolowa and Mékomo). The spectacle of these immense granite walls, over 100 m high, is well worth the 4-hour round trip by car. You can also travel by 4x4 to the Mbil-Bekon chasm, also known as the "ghost hole", some 20 km along the eastern track, near the village of Nkoétyé. Belief has it that this chasm is inhabited by a monster chained to its walls since the dawn of time. In Ebolowa itself, the remains of the German fort are probably the only point of interest.
