The Romanesque and Gothic Notre-Dame Cathedral in Bayeux, with a Chapter House accessible during guided tours.
Notre-Dame Cathedral is one of France's most exceptional Romanesque and Gothic buildings. Inaugurated by Odon (bishop and half-brother of the Conqueror) in the presence of William the Conqueror in 1077, it was partly destroyed thirty years later, during the war between the sons of the Duke of Normandy. It was also Odon who commissioned the Bayeux Tapestry to adorn the cathedral. It remained there for seven centuries. Of the 11th-century Romanesque church, the two present-day towers and the crypt adorned with angel musicians remain.
From the 12th century onwards, rebuilds were marked by the Romanesque style in the nave's great arcades and their chiselled decoration (12th century), then by the Gothic style in the choir, the axial chapel, the mural-painted chapels and the chapter house (13th-15th centuries). The central tower with its green dome was not completed until the 19th century.
