The city of Rustaq, located 159 km from Muscat, was once the capital of the region and is now the administrative center of the inland part of the Batinah. Like Sohar, it has played a decisive role in the history of this part of the country, due to its strategic position at the entrance to the wadi Bani Hauf, which commanded access to Gebel Akhdar. It is a long built-up area, with most of the shops and restaurants on the main street. It deserves a stop for three reasons: its impressive fort, the highest in the country; a walk in the old souk; the hot spring of Ayn Al Kasfah.
