IGREJA DA MISERICORDIA
Church of Mercy in Tavira, home to the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon, with its altarpieces and magnificent antique azulejos.
One of the jewels in Tavira's crown, the Church of Mercy dates back to the 16thcentury and is considered the most remarkable Renaissance building in the Algarve. It is the work of master builder André Pilarte, who was also involved in the construction of Lisbon's sumptuous Jeronimos Monastery. The Renaissance spirit is perceptible in the portal flanked by statues, Portuguese shields and high-reliefs depicting saints. Inside, the spirit is reflected in the columns and altarpieces in the chapels. There are also some magnificent antique azulejos.
