Old town featuring a completely refurbished cathedral with bell tower, with a terrace offering panoramic views over Faro.
Enter via the Arco da Vila at the southern end of the marina. You lose yourself in the narrow, timeless streets until you come to the Largo da Sé, where Faro Cathedral has been enthroned amidst orange trees for centuries. Completely rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, it is adorned with beautiful 17th-century azulejos. The only remaining Gothic vestige is the bell tower. Panoramic view of Faro from the bell tower terrace. Behind it, the old town hall and bishop's palace complete the picture of the historic center.

Vaut le coup d'y passer une demi journée. A combiner avec tour sur la ria Formosa. Pas plus pour moi...

Une vieille cité non défigurée
La place centrale, avec la cathédrale, est un véritable décor de cinéma. Et l'ascension du clocher de l'église vaut pour la découverte de la lagune de Faro, et de certaines habitantes nombreuses dans la ville.

La vieille ville est facilement visitable, on y voit de jolis monuments comme sur la place principale où se trouve de beaux orangers et une église qui offre une superbe vue du haut de son clocher. Les petites ruelles pavées sont agréables et on trouve de petits restaurants sympathiques et de bon rapport qualité-prix. Nous n'avons pas été déçu.

La vielle ville se visite facilement en une journée à pieds. Il est interessant de se promener sur les petites routes pavées.
