At 1 hour 40 of Mazar-e-Sharif. The journey is fast enough because the road is new. It is the town of Abdul Rachid Dostom, one of the cruellest warlords in Afghanistan. As soon as we enter it, we understand that we are in its fief: a welcome arch is located at the entrance to the city, with a great portrait of the Chief of War. In the city, there are also several large billboards to its glory. In the th century, just before the Mongolian invasion, Sheberghan was a prosperous city. Many caravans crossed her, even after the devastating passage of Genghis Khan. In 1275, a famous traveller put his bag here: it was Marco Polo. It particularly appreciated the melons of Sheberghan. Even today, its melons are famous. But the current prosperity of Sheberghan comes mainly from its gas fields, discovered in 1960. This gas is transported over 200 km to the north via a pipeline. It also crosses the Amu Darya. The pipeline was opened in 1974. Today, Sheberghan is the centre of Uzbek power in Afghanistan. The explosion of a bomb injured several people in June 2012. According to the local police, it was a former town of the city, which was injured during the attack. Other sources believe that Dostom himself was targeted.
