In the heart of the Turcoman country, Andhoy is a beautiful colourful town. As a capital of carpet and caracul, it has made use of its transition point to prosper: Caravanes from Hérât, others from Balkh stopped there before leaving Samarkand. It was a major centre for cultural and commercial exchanges. Andhoy continued to develop until the mid th century, but then saw black days when it became dependent on Bukhara in 1845. In 1881, under the reign of Amir Abdur Rahman (1880-1901), the city returned under Afghan control. In the north-east of the city, the old citadel is now in ruins. But, at the foot of these ruins, we can still see the ramparts (Bala Hissar), as well as old ruined mosques and tombs.
