This day of the little flags(vlaggetjesdag) marks the official opening of the herring season. It marks the arrival of the "Hollandse Nieuwe" (literally new Dutch), the first herring of the season, ready to be eaten. It is a historical celebration that takes place every year in the harbor of Scheveningen and attracts thousands of people annually. Various activities for young and old are organized, including old-fashioned games, historical re-enactments and of course, the tasting of herring.
