COBRA MUSEUM - MUSÉE COBRA
Museum dedicated to the Cobra movement, whose interior presents a huge playful space with white walls flooded with natural light
This museum in Amstelveen is dedicated to the Cobra movement. From the outside, it looks like two closed triangles, slid one inside the other. Inside, there's a huge, playful space with white walls, flooded with natural light and a resolutely Zen atmosphere. A circular patio topped by a glass roof adds to its luminosity, which wonderfully highlights the strong colors generally used by Cobra artists, in a neutral-toned decor by architect Wim Quist, already designer of Rotterdam's Maritime Museum and the Kröller-Müller Museum annex. Some rooms offer sumptuous views over the old canal, making the visit even more enjoyable. The museum has focused on modern art since 1945. And as the name suggests, most of the exhibits - at least the permanent ones - are devoted to the international Cobra movement. The Vrij Beelden and Creatie collections add to the panorama of Dutch art of the second half of the 20th century the names of Arnando, Boers, Gerrits, Hunziker, Ortvald, Corneille and many others... The Dane Ortvald, of the Cobra movement, is quoted as saying on visiting this museum: "It is precisely to this established order, the world of museums, that we have been so opposed." The museum frequently organizes interesting temporary exhibitions. Please note: this museum is currently threatened with closure, and petitions are being launched to fight for its preservation.
