Muiderslot is one of the country's oldest and best-maintained castles

Built in 1285 under the orders of Count Florent V, Muiderslot is one of the oldest castles in the country, and among the best maintained. It is an excellent visit from Amsterdam, accessible quite quickly from the central station (1h by bike, 45 min by public transport or 20 min by car). The visit is pleasant and impressive: the castle has kept its drawbridge, its ramparts, its moat, and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Many facilities are available for children. Audioguides available in French.

Open every day from 10 am to 5 pm. Entrance fee : 17,50 € for adults, 10 € for children under 11 and free for children under 4.

Discover the Muiderslot

Near Amsterdam you will find the impressive Rijksmuseum Muiderslot. The castle is surrounded by water and castle gardens. It is one of the oldest (over 700 years old!) and best preserved castles in the Netherlands.

A unique national museum

Muiderslot Castle has been a national museum since 1878. Before that date, the castle was completely dilapidated and was even close to being demolished. Fortunately, this never happened because King William I got involved. In 1878, the castle became one of the first national museums of the Netherlands. The castle was extensively renovated by architect Pierre Cuypers, who you may know from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Central Station.

Gardens

The gardens of Muiderslot Castle were designed and created in the 17th century. They had a decorative function and provided vegetables, fruits and herbs for the table. It was always convenient and necessary to have food nearby. The gardens are a wonderful place to enjoy and relax.

Water Screen

The water shield pavilion is located behind Muiderslot Castle. Go underground and discover everything there is to know about Muiderslot Castle and the water that surrounds it. Was water the friend or enemy of the castle? You will find out in the animated film and a short presentation. Then you will be confronted with the decision: do I go through the water gate or not?
