Superb proeflokaal of the hypercentre, ideal place for a tasting in a charming and photogenic historical setting
For a real trip back in time, head for this tasting room behind Dam Square. This is one of the city's oldest proeflokaal, opened in 1619 (no less!). A former distillery that has remained virtually untouched, it's an enchanting place, with a small counter and barrels of gin that have been lined up for centuries. You can drink standing up, watched over by the portraits of Amsterdam's mayors painted on the bottles. One of the city's best places to try a variety of genevas. Beware, this café closes quite early.
