Located 115 km east of Madrid, this city of more than 58,000 inhabitants is the homeland of Saint Teresa. Founded in the 11th century to protect itself from the invasion of the Moors, this medieval city is today in a very good state of conservation, especially its 12th century wall. With a length of 2,516 meters, it is one of the most beautiful in Spain, with its 9 gates from different periods, its 87 semicircular towers and its superb Gothic cathedral. It is also the highest provincial capital in Spain (1,131 m). Summers are less hot here. In 2015, the city celebrated the 500th anniversary of the birth of Saint Teresa of Avila.
