30 kilometers south of Merida, it is the main town of the Tierra de Barros region, which takes its name from its location in an area planted with almond trees. With more than 33,700 inhabitants, it is a dynamic city with white facades where bodegas of Ribera de Guadiana wine proliferate. Since 1980, it has also acquired a tradition of producing Cava, a Spanish sparkling wine. Almendralejo is also a symbol of Romanticism because it was the birthplace of poets like José de Espronceda or Carolina Coronado. Archaeological remains testify to its existence since antiquity, but its foundation is due to the repopulation carried out after its reconquest by the Order of Santiago, in the 13th century. The convent of the Poor Clares, founded in the 16th century, with its modest façade that contrasts with the richness of its interior, produces exquisite homemade sweets. Just across the street is the Franciscan convent of San Antonio, built in 1652 and classified as being of historical and artistic interest. The historic site has several stately homes. The church of Nuestra Señora de la Purificación is worth a visit. It is Gothic in style and has a bell tower with plateresque and isabeline details. The Virgen de Candelaria festival is held on February 2nd. Candlesticks and bonfires are lit and the children born the previous year are presented to the Virgin. A procession follows.
