Born of the discovery of gold in 1870, Georgetown is a town located on the Etheridge River. Named after Howard St George, Gilberton's assistant gold commissioner, it inherited the nickname "poor man's goldfield", as gold nuggets could be collected on the surface and required no equipment. The region is also home to precious stones such as topaz, quartz, aquamarine and sapphire. The Ted Elliott Museum boasts one of the finest collections in the country. Last but not least, Georgetown is a supply center for the surrounding farms, and roadtrains thunder through this community.
