Newcastle is located 167 km north of Sydney, at the mouth of the Hunter River. With over 400,000 inhabitants, it is the 2nd largest city in New South Wales and the 1st in the Hunter Valley. It is home to the world's largest port for coal exports, of which the region is a producer. From Sydney, you can reach Newcastle by train in 2.5 hours, with frequent departures and under the Opal card ceiling.
