This 4 km² island was formed as a result of volcanic activity, which led to melting ice and flooding in the valleys. Since then, South Molle Island has been a quiet island, very close to Mid Molle and North Molle Islands. The resort damaged by Cyclone Debbie in 2017 has not been renovated since, but there are several campsites there, notably at Sandy Bay and Paddle Bay. The campsites are managed by Queensland National Park (more info: parks.des.qld.gov.au) and reservations must be made in advance. The island is accessible from either Shute Harbour or Airlie Beach. Ideal for a hiking break.
