Mount Etna Caves National Park is located 26 km north of Rockhampton and about three hours south of Mackay. The park is named after the Archer brothers, who settled in the area in the 1850s and named the site after the Sicilian volcano. After being mined until 1945, the caves were protected in 1975. Its ornate limestone caves are home to more than 80% of the breeding population of the bent wing bat species found in Australia. The park is also one of the few places in the country where you can see a colony of ghost bats classified as a vulnerable species.
