Located on the Tropic of Capricorn, Rockhampton is the capital of the ox, the rodeo, the true symbol of the stockman. Life-size bull statues greet visitors as they enter the city and the stores and restaurants all have cowboy signs: this port city has a western feel to it and we like it. The city also has many beautiful old buildings, especially on Quay Street, which has some of the most interesting Victorian facades in Australia. The city is also the starting point for the islands of Great Keppel, Lady Musgrave and Heron Islands.
