Ðakovo, 35 km from Osijek, is a pretty stopover in the region, built on the site of Certissa, a small Roman city. The town and surrounding plain are dominated by the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, built under the orders of Bishop Strossmayer in the 19th century. The town, which became an episcopal residence in 1239, is famous for its bishopric, which played a major role in the region's development. In the 14th century, it was surrounded by fortifications, but the Ottomans succeeded in dominating it for almost 150 years, building a mosque in the 16th century, which is now a church. When they were driven out in the 17th century, the Turks set fire to Ðakovo.
