Arsenal with a terrace and a theater in Hvar housing galley shipyards of the Serenissima.
Hvar's most important public building, the Arsenal was built under the rule of the Republic of Venice, between 1292 and 1331, as the Serenissima wished to have shipyards worthy of its large fleet of galleys. It was rebuilt in the 16th century, but because it was too strategic in the Adriatic, it was destroyed by the Ottomans as soon as it was delivered in 1571. Finally, in 1611, under the governance of Prince Pietro Semitecolo, the inhabitants recovered a superstructure to store their stocks of grain and salt. In 1612, the belvedere and front staircases were erected, providing access to the terrace and theater.
Hvar's historic theater. Located on the second floor of the Arsenal, this Italian-style theater is one of the oldest in Europe. On the lintel of the entrance door, an inscription indicates 1612, the year of its construction, which was made possible thanks to the contributions of the entire local community, as well as those of wealthy foreign visitors. The auditorium with its period boxes dates back to 1803, the year the Theatre Society was founded. The Neo-Baroque style dates back to the mid-19th century. Two mural scenographies, dating from 1819 and 1900, have been preserved in their original state. Numerous plays from the classical repertoire were performed here throughout the year. Restoration of the historic monument is currently underway, so access to the theater is limited. Please contact the tourist office for information on organized tours.
