Park inviting to go around the lake of Vransko, one of the biggest in Europe. Part of it is a bird sanctuary.
When you stay in Pakoštane, the first thing you will do is to go around the lake! It is huge, 14 km long and 2 km wide, i.e. 3 000 ha - one of the biggest in Europe. Its depth does not exceed 5 m. Because of its proximity to the coast, during high tides, sea water enters the fresh water. Sea water and river fish (trout, catfish, tench, carassin, eel, but also sea bass, mug, sole) are found side by side.
To the north-west, in a part declared a nature park and bird sanctuary, rushes and reeds grow. Colonies of birds have taken up residence here. It is one of the most important bird reserves in the country. One can observe 111 species of birds, a multitude of avian species, different species of wild ducks, herons. During the migration period, some birds stay around the lake. Several paths pass over the water, observation points have been set up. A boat trip around the lake allows you to discover marshy landscapes that are difficult to access by land.
To get there. By car or motorbike, from Biograd or Pakoštane, take the direction of Vrana. By bus (Vrana).
By bicycle, 44 km of cycle tracks, which you will have to explore, criss-cross the lake area, some of them intersecting with the national road, which is perfect for cycle touring. Count on a day's ride, bring water, a picnic lunch and sun protection.
