It was built between 1419 and 1421 by architect Hacı Ivaz Paşa on behalf of Sultan Mehmet I Çelebi on the site of a Byzantine church. The famous decoration, which made it such a success, was carried out after his death in 1424. The façade is in white marble, and the prayer room is lined with blue-green glazed tiles. Its inverted-T architecture is typical of the early Ottoman era.
