This city didn't exist before 1995. Raised from the lagoon (which is what its name means in Arabic) by the will and investment of Egypt's richest family, the Sawiris, the complex you see today is a haven of beauty compared to neighboring Hurghada, whose urbanism is perplexing. El Gouna is first and foremost a small village with a cobbled square around which, under ochre-coloured arcades, chic boutiques are set up. Like a snail, the second circle is made up of luxury hotels with their own harmony of architecture and color. Just outside, a golf course taunts the sun.
