60 kilometers south of Aïn Sokhna, this desert town on the Red Sea is of major interest to pilgrims on their way to the Christian monasteries of St. Anthony and St. Paul, sometimes referred to as "the monasteries of the Red Sea", as they were the world's first monasteries. To the north-west of the city lies Egypt's largest wind farm, and one of the largest in the world. Zaafarana is also home to many important raw materials. Nearby are several tourist villages that are popular with tourists, who prefer Hurghada, some 350 kilometers away.
