Borg al Arab is located 45 kilometers southwest of Alexandria and a few kilometers from the Mediterranean coast. Named after the miniature replica of the Alexandria lighthouse, the village is at the center of three interesting archaeological sites: Abousir, to the north-west of the village, Filossenite, to the north-east, and the monastery of Saint Menas, built in the 3rd century in memory of Saint Menas and which, according to legend, hides the saint's remains. They were brought from Phrygia on a camel and buried where the camel refused to go any further. There are plenty of places to eat and spend the night. Borg al Arab also has an airport.
