Basilica built to plans by Alexandre Marcel and to the specifications of Baron Empain, who wanted a Byzantine church.
The basilica was built from 1911 to 1913 on the plans of Alexandre Marcel, and on the indications of Baron Empain who wanted a Byzantine church. The church has the shape of a cross, and is surmounted by domes that want to evoke Saint Sophia in Istanbul. Its name was changed from Our Lady of Tongre to Our Lady of Fatima. After the death of Baron Empain in 1929, his remains were transported to Egypt; he is buried in a vault in the basilica. The Heliopolitans do not call it Notre-Dame, but kinissat el-baron: "the church of the Baron".
