A magnificent Sphinx, carved directly into the rock, with a total length of 57 metres and a height of around 20 metres.

A universal symbol of existential enigma, the Sphinx remains one of the most fascinating mysteries of ancient Egypt. For the ancient Egyptians, the Sphinx was "the living image of the Pharaoh". yet, 4,500 years after its construction, very little is known about its origins. Carved directly into the rock, on site, this monument is a limestone monoblock. For the first time, the face of a king (Kephren) is affixed to the body of a lion, the symbol of strength and the solar god. Not only did this creature revolutionize Egyptian iconography, it also transformed the tradition of Egyptian mausoleums, amplifying their radiance.

During its long history, the Sphinx has been restored and demolished several times. A stele placed between its legs credits Thutmes IV with building a wall to protect it from the sand. Along with natural erosion, it was above all the Mamelukes who subjected it to the worst outrages, going so far as to take away its nose during a cannon-firing exercise. It was finally cleared of sand in the mid-1920s. Its total length is 57 m and its height, from the front, is around 20 m. But its rock, sculpted on a water table, is now in danger. With salt rising to the surface and weakening the stone, the fight to save it has begun. You won't be alone in front of this magnificent Sphinx, so take your time and enjoy this unique monument!

Monument impressionnant.

A voir absolument.

Epoustouflant
