This small calm city, located in a superb natural environment, on its high plateau near the eponymous lake, is for the Bulgarians a place of sadly famous memory, related to the massacres by the Turks during the insurrection of April 1876. A repression which strongly marked the spirits of the region, but also the whole Bulgarian national conscience. Today, Batak is a popular summer resort for Sofiotes; 30,000 visitors come every year. As a result, the buildings around the lake have multiplied. Batak is still a charming little town near the lake with many attractions.
