You'll still see "Nakhon Ratchasima" written at airports, railway stations and on official documents, but the Thais still use the old name: Khorat (or Korat). This agglomeration of 166,200 inhabitants, Thailand's pottery capital and birthplace of the Siamese cat, the Khorat, can be considered geographically as the gateway to Isaan when arriving from Bangkok. A large provincial town with heavy traffic, this former American base (during the Vietnam War) has become an important trading center, particularly for Laos and Cambodia. Its commercial boom began in the early 1980s.
