Located about sixty kilometers from Nakhon Ratchasima, this very quiet town on the banks of the Mun River is home to one of the most important historical sites of Khmer art. In the past, the town was connected to Angkor by road. The central sanctuary was built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries. It was at this time that the Khmer empire was at its peak, extending from Angkor over the whole region including present-day Laos and eastern Thailand. It is not essential to spend the night in Phimai provided that you leave Nakhon Ratchasima early in the morning to return to sleep in the evening.
