This is the last stage of Quebrada proper. Its name in Quechua means "bull's head". After this bull's head at an altitude of 2,900 m, it is the most complete void: we enter a totally desert region that stretches as far as La Quiaca and the Bolivian border. Humahuaca is the most important village of Quebrada, but has kept all the charm of its cobbled streets and its colonial style with its low adobe houses. Its carnival, which takes place in February, is one of the most famous in the region. Until the end of the 19th century it was one of the most important centres for trade on the road to Upper Peru.
