Another small lost village whose attraction is again the adobe church and the cactus wood frame. Uquia is located at an altitude of 2,825 metres and has only 500 inhabitants. Don't miss a short stop if you are passing through by car. Humahuaca is only 12 kilometres away, and Tilcara is 30. It is picturesque and far away from the tourist buses. Uquia takes its name from an indigenous people who used to live here before, the Omaguacas. The speciality of the village is the breeding of vicuñas, those wild camelids that used to live in the quebrada (there are almost none now), and the very soft wool that is used to make high quality sweaters
