Purmamarca is the first interesting stop in the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its breathtaking colors and views. It is perhaps the most charming of its villages. You are already at 2,100 m of altitude, on a road that climbs towards Bolivia, 65 km from Jujuy and 25 km from Tilcara. The most beautiful surprise that the village reserves for you is its very famous mountain of the seven colors. Unfortunately the place is very touristic, and sometimes there are a lot of people on the small paths that lead to it. For some, the name of the village means in Aymara language "city of the Virgin Land" in Cacan language "where the puma marks", for others, the Quechua language translates it as "the village of the lion". Purmamarca is a small village out of time, and is best discovered in the morning, when the sunlight has not yet burned the seven mineral colors of its mountain. And especially when there are less people in the streets. Tourism here, in high season, can quickly become unpleasant. However, there are also many national tourists, which allows the village to keep some authenticity. Here is the most important handicraft market and the starting point for the excursion to the Salinas Grandes.
