This artificial lake has the particularity of having been created by King Dhatusena in 460 BC to supply the capital Anuradhapura with water. It is actually a complex of two reservoirs (Kala Wewa and Balalu Wewa), with a total capacity of 123 million cubic meters. The water then flowed from the main lock through rice fields, ending up in the Tissa Wewa reservoir in Anuradhapura, 87 km away. Engineers agree that even today, it would be very difficult to implement a project of this magnitude.
