This is where the visit to the ancient sites really begins. Dambulla is the geographical center of the island. The Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, also known as the "Golden Temple", has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1991. It is probably the best preserved historical site on the island. It is a complex of cave temples, protected at the base of the rock by a huge modern golden Buddha. The caves are accessed by stairs carved into the stone. It seems that they were used as a place of worship before the arrival of Buddhism, but it was in the 12th century that the king of Polonnaruwa decided to make it a place of Buddhist worship.
