70 km north of Kandy, 148 km east of Colombo and 22 km southeast of Sigiriya. Dambulla is famous for its Rock Temple, a troglodytic temple located at the top of the huge granite rock overlooking the valley. This rock, which was occupied as early as the 3rd century BC, contains the most important troglodytic complex in Sri Lanka. Only the five halls of Rock Temple, beautifully decorated with paintings and statues of Buddha, can be visited. Almost the entire site has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991 under the name of the Golden Temple, in fact the name of the second temple located at the bottom of the rock and which dates back to the year 2000.
