Delimited by the map by Anuradhapura, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, this triangle contains the main part of the archaeological heritage of the country, corresponds to the sites of the ancient Sinhalese kingdoms that ruled the country, with increasingly reduced territories, until the beginning of the 19th century. Most of these sites had, over the centuries, been covered by jungle and were finally cleared and "rediscovered" by archaeologists in the early 20th century.

Here, the landscape is dry and occupied by a more or less dense savannah. At its heart glisten the tanks, sometimes gigantic, which have been used to irrigate crops since the most remote times.
