This statue of Buddha, carved out of a large granite boulder but not completely detached from it, is almost 12 metres high. It is believed to date from the5th century, and its name, which means 'sun-feeder', indicates that dawn is the best time to see it. It depicts Buddha standing, performing a variation of the Abhaya mudra. The robe worn directly on the body is very realistic, with elaborately carved folds. Unfortunately, a roof has recently been placed over this sculpture, making the site much less spectacular.

Belle découverte!
Le Bouddha d'AUKANA mérite notre visite. Récemment restauré, il nous offre une splendeur en matière de sculpture que l'on apprécie d'autant que l'ensemble date du Ve siècle! Peu de visite touristique au profit de locaux venus faire leurs dévotions.

Joli lieu spirituel mais très reculé dans le pays et peu d'autre chose à voir au alentour. Il est facile d'y aller en voiture, peu de tours touristiques passe par là, nous avons croisé que quelques locaux en train de se recueillir.
