Before the arrival of the Spanish in 1565, there was a small village near the Magsungay river, inhabited by Malay people belonging to the Taga-ilog group. The missionaries placed the village under the protection of Saint Sebastian, which earned it the name San Sebastian de Magsungay. Today, the village has become Bacolod City, capital of the country's sugar industry and of the province of Negros Occidental. Located on the island's north-western coast, Bacolod comprises around 25% of the province's total population (around 650,000), and is the second-largest city in the Visayas after Cebu. In addition to its sugar industry, fishing is highly developed. Ceramics and textiles (hablon) are the city's specialties. Bacolod, the gateway to the province, is also the starting point for climbing the superb Canlaon volcano. Bacolod is mainly a place of transit; people pass through, but rarely more than that.
