After a pleasant right road on 120 km along the coast east of Tripoli (about 1 hour drive towards Sirte and Cyrenaica) you will find one of the most unforgettable moments of your stay in Libya: The visit of the fabulous ancient town of Leptis Magna, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1982 and extending to the sea.The road will first have made you cross Tajoura, city of the large suburbs of Tripoli, with its stalls of crumbling merchants of fruit and vegetables, then a campaign planted with olive trees where the road edges display here and there small trestles of local sellers of fruit, honey (including a delicious honey of almond blossoms) and olive oil.The entrance to the archaeological site (which leaves in no doubt the splendid vestiges more northerly still hidden by the Eucalyptus) is located on a street parallel to the road leading to Misratha and Syrte: This is the main street leading to the centre of the town of Khoms, a little more east. In front of the archaeological site are the tourist police offices, in a building of Italian times surrounded by ancient columns and statues. (Refer to the City of Khoms for details on the road and the possibilities for catering and accommodation nearby).
