During his passage to Beni Walid in 1817 on the road of the fortified farms and mausoleums of Ghirza, English Lieutenant W.H. Smyth noted two features that still characterize the places: the fertility of the bed of the Wadi, where the inhabitants still cultivate beautiful gardens under the shadow of olive trees and palm trees, and the fact that its population belonged to the tribe of Warfala, which is now one of Libya's most influential. Beni Walid houses a museum and a hotel, and is therefore a popular stopover on the Ghirza road.
