Almost equal distance from Tripoli (210 km west) and Syrte (250 km east), the town of Misratha is located at the extreme west of the Gulf of Sirte. It can be a short but pleasant stopover thanks to its small museum and the streets covered in the little medina. According to Greek sources, his former name was «Tabakt» and then after antiquity «Sawari ar-Rimal» (the sand Tower in Arabic) because of its numerous and large coastal dunes. Misratha is a city with a long known shopping tradition of the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans, an important stop of trade caravans at the intersection of North Africa, Black Africa, Asia and Europe. A third city of Libya (and third port also), Misratha lives in the industrial and commercial development of the free zone created in 2000. It has a large steel complex, the largest industrial complex in Libya. Many shops and goods of all kinds surround its streets, where sometimes you come from low prices.
