Located 29 km from Aracaju, the city was founded in 1590, making it the fourth oldest in the country. It was the capital of the state of Sergipe until 1855 and an important economic center thanks to the cultivation of sugar cane. Today, like Laranjeiras, it is a peaceful little town, where you can visit the Igreja do Senhor dos Passos (18th century), which houses the small Museu de Arte Sacra (collection considered the third most important in Brazil), or the Igreja do Convento de São Francisco, which dates from 1693. The city has also been listed as a national historic site since 1939
